GROUP OF WOMEN IXCHEL (2009/2010)
Organization for the rights of young women in Guatemala.

Ixchel is a new Swedish-Guatemalan organization that is working to protect, defend and strengthen the rights for young women in Guatemala. The aim is to work on issues such as leadership, self-confidence, independence and education in young women from age of 10 and onward.
Guatemala is one of those countries where the ”macho culture” strongly affects the society and everyday life. This imposes a dangerous situation and causes thousands of women victims every year who suffer from rape, murder or general harassment.

THE PRINCESSES OF GUATEMALA (2008/2009)
International networking project with and for young women in Guatemala.
This is a 12 months project for and with girls in the age 10-21 who are resident in an orphanage in Guatemala City. The idea of the project springs from the former Sharikompaniet projects in collaboration with human rights organization Casa Alianza. The aim of the project is to strengthen the self-confidence in girls who have suffered from drugs, prostitution, abuse, trafficking or have been abandoned by their parents and reduce the victimization of girls with social problems through enhancing their capacities, dreams and personalities.
- The shooting of a documentary with three girls staying in the orphanage Refugio de la Niñez. The film puts its focus on their dreams, hopes and every-day life as well as their strong will and dedication to fight for a better future.
- Workshops in theatre, dance, video, literature, music, painting and creativity for all the girls resident in the orphanage Refugio de la Niñez.
- Follow-up of the theme of the documentary through starting a new Swedish-Guatemalan organization, “Group of women Ixchel” working to defend, protect and strengthen the rights of young women
The first two parts of the project ”The princesses of Guatemala” have been completed and were carried through from November 2008 until September 2009 in Guatemala. This project was initially in collaboration with Casa Alianza but had to change since Casa Alianza unexpectedly closed down in January 2009. The project could continue through a transition period and evolved with new organization Refugio de la Niñez (which was founded by the former staff of Casa Alianza).
